Over 300 ships cross The Strait of Gibraltar each day.  The Rock of Gibraltar creates a perfect landmark for ships entering the Mediterrenean for the onward journey to Europe, Africa and The Middle East.  The Strait of Gibraltar conects the Meditterean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean for travel onwards to The Americas.
