Three Flights Delayed Landing at Gibraltar

Gibraltar International Airport presents many challenges for pilots landing at this uniquely located airport. Nestled in between two continents, a massive sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, you will find Gibraltar International Airport.

During the morning of August 12, 2023 a heavy fog engulfed The Rock of Gibraltar, layering the sea-level airport runway in a thick misty fog. A total of five flights were scheduled for that morning, however, only three were able to arrive safely. Click the video below to see the fog from that morning in time lapse video.

That Saturday morning easyJet's flight U28791 arrived first followed by BA492 by British Airways to the way point just east of Gibraltar known as PIMOS. Just an hour before, the fog was so heavy an earlier British Airways flight from London Heathrow was diverted to Malaga. Was this to be the fate of these two planes currently holding out over the Alboran Sea?

These two planes, holding for at least 20 minutes out over the Alboran would soon hear

easyJet's second flight of the day, from London Gatwick, EZY6533, over the radio contacting Gibraltar tower. The tower alerted the flight that conditions were improving. This was obviously a relief to the the other cabin crew on board EZY8791 and BA492, as conditions would soon present the opportunity for a safe landing.

The radio tower announced to EZY6533, a recently acquired aircraft for easyJet, that by the time he arrived to Gibraltar, conditions should be ready for landing.

Luckily, that is exactly what happened. Within minutes of that radio call, the fog started sweeping out over the sea, blowing in the wind. Moments later, EZY8791 was repositioned to glide south of The Rock of Gibraltar, and make its sharp turn for approach and landing to runway 09. Within minutes the A20N was able to gain visual of the runway and make a safe landing. Shortly followed by BA492 at 12:49 pm (local time), and EZY6533 at 12:55.

The fog that morning was intense but moved out just in time to create safe conditions for these planes landing at Gibraltar International Airport. Below is the information of each flights landing and departure that Saturday morning. The full videos of these landings and departures will be released in late August 2023 on Ministry of Flight on YouTube.

Final note: A while back I had a short conversation with some runners who stopped at my location for a quick break. I chatted with them briefly and when I told her my channel name, she responded "oh, is that with the government?" My response was "no, I made it up only to find out that everything else revolving around British and Gibraltar Government is named Ministry." For the record, this channel is not affiliated with any government entity, it's just a name I made up and all of the opinions in my articles and videos are solely mine unless documented as otherwise.
