Updated requirements for entry into Spain and updated requirements for The Spain Gibraltar border.

The first part of this article covers Spain Gibraltar Border covid restrictions/requirements.

See the 2nd half of this article for covid entry restrictions Spain, for details on flying into Spain.

This article has been updated as of 3 September 2022. At the end of the article I have included the pertinent websites for border control, ministries of health etc, jump there now to see those websites you might need.

Answer: THERE ARE NO COVID ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR CROSSING THE SPAIN GIBRALTAR BORDER.

As of the time of writing this article, 3 September 2022, there is no additional paperwork or forms to fill out to cross The Spain Gibraltar border. If you fly to Gibraltar Airport, one of Europes most dangerous airports, and you plan to enter Spain by foot, car or bike, you will only need your passport for crossing.

The Spanish border authorities will not request any information regarding covid vaccine status, negative test or proof of recovery. If you are in Spain and wish to cross the border to Gibraltar, the Gibraltarian border authorities will not request any information regarding covid vaccine status, negative test of proof of recovery.

To cross the Spain Gibraltar border, you will need to provide your passport and or EU identification card. Since I cross the border several times per week, I must present my American Passport and my Spanish residency ID card. I DO NOT have to present any type of covid related documentation to cross the Spain Gibraltar Border.

If you do not have an EU card (resident or citizen), when you present your passport you will get a stamp from the Spain side leaving Spain and another upon your return.

I cross the border several times per week without issue or incident. Take a look at my video about crossing the border.

SPAIN COVID REQUIREMENTS

Start here for information on what you need to enter Spain for travel to Spain, with this information about Spain Covid entry Requirements.

If you are arriving from a European Union Country, you will not be required to present any covid paperwork.

The official Ministry of Health website states:

Passengers arriving in Spain by AIR OR SEA from these countries will NOT be required to present the SpTH health control form or a COVID-19 certificate.

Here is the list of Countries:

ARRIVING FROM A COUNTRY OUTSIDE THE EU

If you are flying into Spain from a country not on the above list, YOU WILL BE REQUIRED to present covid paperwork to enter Spain. (I use paperwork as broad term because we all have different types of documents for this).

Go to this website https://www.spth.gob.es/ to fill in the forms you will need to enter Spain. If you have a digital EU covid vaccination certificate you can check here if it is acceptable to the Spanish government for entry. If you do not have that certificate then continue on to that site https://www.spth.gob.es/ where you will be prompted to fill out the Spain Health Control Form.

For this you will need one of the following to fill out the form and gain entry into Spain:

  1. Covid Vaccination Certificate with boosters OR

  2. Negative PCR test taken no sooner than 72 hours prior to arrival OR

  3. Doctors letter that you have recovered from covid in the previous 6 months.

You need only one of those documents to enter, you do not need all three. The health control center upon arrival to Spain may ask you for the paperwork related to the above documentation so be sure to have those documents ready at the time of crossing. I like having mine printed out and in my backpack, that way if they ask me for it, I have it ready. You never know if your phone dies, or you don't have internet connection, which could slow you down if you don't have it printed.

For example, if you are flying from the USA, Canada or United Kingdom and landing in Madrid, you would need to take the above steps. If you are flying from the USA, Canada, or UK and landing in a different EU country, like Portugal and then flying to Spain after, you will not need to fill out the above information.

Honestly, it's all kind of confusing because the rules in most EU countries have been dropped. I hope this article helps you and if you have any questions please feel free to ask. I am not an expert or government official, I am an American living in Spain at the Gibraltar border, so I have to stay up to date on the information about travel back and forth to Spain.
