Gibraltar Airport Update; The Winter Schedule has Commenced

Writer's picture: Michael HARTUNGMichael HARTUNG

Unfortunately for me, the winter schedule at Gibraltar Airport has begun. It looks like as of Monday 31 October the schedule changed from summer to winter.

During the summer months on the busy days at the airport we get as many as 6 -7 commercial flights. On those busy days we would see flights form London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Bristol, Manchester and Edinburgh. The nice thing is that those landings and departures would be stacked, or would be all in a row.

Today is 4 November 2022 and we have 4 flights today. Completely spread out. London Gatwick lands at 10:25 am, now the Edinburgh flight is delayed and won't land until just after noon today. There is a British Airways flight at 4:50pm followed by the night flight of Manchester landing today at 9pm. This schedule makes it quite difficult to be able to go out for plane spotting.

This schedule change is a far cry from what my summer at Gibraltar Airport looked like plane spotting. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays I would get the chance to see most all of these flights landing and departing back to back. Check out these two previous articles I published about some of those days and the awesomeness of having flights one after another.

Gibraltar Airport is unique in that it has a road on the runway, its surrounded by water, its technically a military airport, the airspace directly to the north is restricted by Spain, the airspace to the South is non existent because it is The Rock of Gibraltar, and the weather here changes so frequently. All of these factors combined make Gibraltar Airport dangerous and unique. These factors make it a really fun airport to plane spot.

With the reduction of flights, it makes it a little more difficult to plane spot. It's tough to get out to the airfield several times a day when the flights are so spread out. So it looks like my winter must consist of booking flights and taking these planes to the UK for some trip reports and some Gibraltar Airport plane videos from inside the aircraft. That can't be all that bad, can it?

Next week Ministry of Flight and THE SPAIN GIBRALTAR CHANNEL are heading to Edinburgh via EZY6934 the direct flight from Gibraltar to Edinburgh. This is a relatively newer flight route over the past year. I'm hoping its going to be awesome and that I picked the right side of the plane for my seat to make sure that I get great views of The Rock!

Because Gibraltar Airport is so small, the slightest change in the flight schedules make a big difference. Well, here's to getting through winter for those spring and summer time flights once again!
