THE SPAIN GIBRALTAR CHANNEL had the great opportunity to join forces with Gibraltar Heritage Trust for #worldcleanupday2022 organized by The Environmental Safety Group, ESG.

Gibraltar Heritage Trust, located at John Mackintosh Square in Gibraltar is,

"entrusted with the preservation of Gibraltar’s heritage and aims to work in partnership with all like-minded bodies, both locally and internationally."

Gibraltar Heritage Trust does a great job organizing events, bringing people together, and restoring & preserving the history of Gibraltar.

Gibraltar Heritage Trust worked with ESG to organize a group to clean up at Princess Amelia Battery for #cleanuptheworldday2022.

The Environmental Safety Group hosted and organized several other locations around The Rock that day, where many volunteers worked countless hours cleaning up litter.

On 17 September 2022, this group of about 20 set out from Princess Caroline's Battery toward Princess Amelia Battery a short walk away.

People of all different ages and backgrounds worked together over the course of two hours cleaning up around Princess Amelia Battery. We all dug right in leaving no stone unturned, climbing into small spaces, under bushes, and inside old bunkers, to ensure we collected all litter at the site.

Plenty of rubbish was found stuck between prickly branches, wedged between rocks, and inside aged and dusty military bunkers. This group was not deterred, yet determined to gather as much litter as they could find for the betterment of the environment.

Princess Amelia Battery is loaded with history dating back to the 18th Century. Remnants of old walls, bricks, stones, and mortar shells are scattered through the area. When the newer battery and artillery were added during WWII, it was simply built in the same area adding to the existing walls.

Currently the artillery guns are not in use, but its a great place to get up close and personal to see the shear size of these immense artillery. Over the course of history some of the guns have been replaced or removed altogether. Some remnants of the removal and replacement of artillery can still be seen today.

Princess Amelia Battery at Gibraltar offers spectacular views over looking The Alboran Sea, The Bay of Gibraltar, Gibraltar International Airport, and its Spanish Neighbor, La Linea de la Concepcion. Princess Amelia Battery is located just a short walk down from Princess Caroline Battery and The Military Heritage Museum. It's an often unused and forgotten place for tourists.

If you are touring at Gibraltar, and on a limited timeline, you might not find yourself at this location. Although peaceful, historical, and featuring stunning views there is not necessarily a lot to see here. I would recommend seeing The Great Siege Tunnels, The WWII Tunnels and the viewing platform at The Top of the The Rock if you are limited on time for your visit to Gibraltar.

Gibraltar Heritage Trust did excellent work organizing members for the clean up of rubbish and litter at Princess Amelia Battery. The group of individuals who came through on a Saturday morning in an effort to improve the beauty and environment of The Rock of Gibraltar is certainly appreciated by all!
