100 Ton Gun, Gibraltar

The 100 Ton Gun at Gibraltar stands as a monument of Victorian Era Military innovation. Many of these innovations can be seen around the world including the 100 Ton Gun at Gibraltar.

This well preserved super gun of the time can be found at the southern end of sunny Gibraltar, a British Overseas Territory. Lying just 7.7 nautical miles from the African Coast, Gibraltar is a militarily strategic stronghold controlling the entrance and exit to the Mediterranean. This made it of even more significance once the Suez Canal was completed in 1869.

The position of the 100 Ton Gun at Gibraltar strategically locates it as a magnificent offensive and defensive weapon for The Bay of Gibraltar. By the time the 100 Ton Gun was installed at Gibraltar it was already out of date.

The 100 Ton Gun at Gibraltar was never actually used for agression, but it stands as status symbol nonetheless. The shells for this gun could pierce armour up to 24 inches thick, a time when most ships were only covered with 18 inches of armor. This made the 100 Ton Gun at Gibraltar a formindal prospect.

If you would like to visit The 100 Ton Gun at Gibraltar, it is open daily. You can either take a bus, taxi or walk. It is out of the way of the center of town, so walking would be a long journey, but if you have time to explore Gibraltar it may be worth it.

The 100 Ton Gun stands as a monument of British Naval and Military power in the 19th Century. Gibraltar is filled with more sites just like this. If you have time to visit Gibraltar, there is so much to see.
